The Challenge
Careless disposal of hazardous waste can pose a serious threat to a community’s health and environment because of toxic substances in the waste and tnheir inability to decompose. To eliminate this danger, the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Research Institute (ERIC) have launched decision a design contest to develop an electronic bin that can store and categorize hazardous waste to achieve the following:
- Reduce the amount of scattered hazardous waste on campus and its cost of disposal
- Separate hazardous waste that can be recycled
- Estanlish a network of architecture students among various universities
- Encourage students to develop technologies that can benefit society
The Method
The electronic bins for hazardous waste project has been implemented as follows:
- Architecture students were recruited to participate in the electronic bin design contest; most were Interior Design majors.
- Participants were taught the basic science and architectural concepts rquired to design an electronic bin.
- Students had to individually design their own prototype while receiving guidance from experts. 4. All inventions were patented in the name of Chulalongkorn University 5.The winning prototype was manufactured and publicized on the “CU Let It Green” website.
The Result
This project provided architecture students with first-hand experience in solving the proble, of scattered hazardous waste on campus, using the knowledge and skills they were taught. While the project has not yet provided a complete solution for the elimination of scattered hazardous waste, the students’ inventions have helped to provide more effective and practical electronic bins.
Next Step
The university plans to distribute the winning electronic bin model to all relevant departments to maximize project outcomes andbenefits.
