The Challenge

Zero Waste is a university  campaign that aims to alter the attitudes, values and behaviors of the CU community in regards to proper waste disposal habits. The campaign comprises three three courses of action: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, which intend to accomplish the objectives as follow to achieve the following:

  1. Reduce the amount of waste on campus
  2. Protect all persons from waste-related health risks
  3. Improve the campus environment
  4. Encourage the use of reusable or refillable items
  5. Promote correct use of different colored recycle bins

The Method

The following procedures have been implemented:

  1. Garbage bins with specific labels: Recycle Waste, General Waste, Food Waste and Hazardous Waste, have been placed throughout the campus.
  2. Many waste recycling projects that aim to convert waste into reusable resources have been introduced under this program, including the construction of artificial ponds for collecting recycled wastewater and rainwater, the installation of a biogas digester tank to produce biogas and the construction of a recycling center to produce fertilizer.
  3. Promotion of reusable material policies to be adopted by faculties and departments, for example, people are encouraged to use fabric bags instead of plastic and  multiple use of plastic containers prior to disposal.

The Result

It has been reported that the amount of uncollected waste on campus decreased by 50 percent in 2015 because the increased number of trash bins that made it easier to discard trash and garbage.

I think the waste division’s burden will be reduced as he university becomes cleaner.

Next Step

To eliminate uncollected waste on campus, the university plans to purchase additional bins to be placed at more campus locations. The university also intends to expand the ongoing recycleing projects, including constructing artificial ponds to collect recycled wastewater and rainwater, installing additionl biogas digester tanks to produce biogas and expanding the recycle center to produce more fertilizer.

Global warming is an important issue. Using less plastic means less waste. I’ve tried  to tell my friends to join this project as it is important to the future of all of us.

I always separate my trash before tossing it. I think it is great to have containers for various sorts of waste in the university. We can’t change others if we don’t change ourselves.
