The Challenge
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission from motor vehicles is a major cause of global warming that decan also harm health. As solution, the university has decided to join hands with “Pun-pun” to further encourage cycling on campus to achieve the following goals:
- Reduce CO2 emission from motor vehicles.
- Promote exercise via cycling.
- Reduce vehicle traffic around and within campus.
- Promote a sustainable lifestyle.
The Method
- In 2013, a bike sharing service was introduced on campus, beginning with total of 100 bicycles and five rental stations. Bikes can now be rented at one station and returned to another for user convenience.
- In 2014, CU upgraded the bike sharing service by collaborating with the “Pun Pun Bike Share” program. There opened additional stations to have a total of seven“Pun-Pun” bike stations: four on campus and three at Siam Square. All users must register through the Pun Pun website to get a membership card to use the service. Project Hi-lights (after 2014)
- The front and back of every bicycle have been installed with automated light systems, which operate via dynamo power generated by bike movement.
- Each rental station operates using electrical power generated by solar cell panels.
- Free cable chains with secure locks are provided to users for security purpose.
The Result
The number of registered users is increasing daily, which signifies that more people are becoming aware of the bike rental service and prefer cycling over motor vehicles.
Next Step
CU plans to construct more bike paths and rental stations to increase cycling use and safety. Problems such as flat tires, bike thieves and full parking slots are being solved proactively.
